Christmas Day 2005 Talk
by Roger Dunlop

I’ve come up with a talk for Christmas Day that will only work this year! So if you can use it or know anyone else who can please do so!
It’s based on a Magic Square idea from an FCM| conference perhaps 15 years ago that I’d shelved because it wouldn't work in the new century (ie it required the magic square total to be the 2 digit year date eg ‘94).

I tried it out at Zodiac Magical Society last night. I went round the room asking each person a question and any who got it wrong had to do a forfeit. It was made a little easier by the underneath of my clipboard showing the sign +1. I was able to stress how amazingly knowledgeable most people were!
I'd explained they had to use their imaginations since this was really a quiz for Christmas Day and I was trying it out on them before my services on the 25th.

(Flip Chart paper with 4x4 grid & heading for Christmas Day: 25-12-05)(completed square already on grid in pencil that stooge but not congregation can see)

Most people like quizzes anytime of year but seem especially popular at Christmas. I can tell just by looking at you this morning that your brains are full of knowledge re Christmas. To prove it we'll have a special quiz. All the answers are numbers I'll get someone to write in these squares. You'll be amazed how much you know.

Magic Square.
4 - Verticals
4- Horizontals
2- Diagonals
9 - every 2x2 box including middle 4 numbers
2- Middle opposite sides
2- Opposite Corner Diagonals
1- Corners
4 – corner number with opposite line of 3

Just in 1 square: 28 easy ways of getting answer 42.

Didn't you all do well?! Add up. Isn't that amazing?! From a series of numbers jotted down in random fashion in answer to our quiz, we discover that all the answers are the same – but there’s one lot of numbers we’ve not added up – today’s date – 25+12+05 = 42 !!
& not only is 42 the answer to those questions. What else is it the answer to? – The Answer to The Ultimate Question Of Life, the Universe and Everything!
Douglas Adams made the number 42 famous. In a recent BBC show (2003) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was nominated as Britain's Best Loved Book.
I did a internet search on Google & Yahoo for ‘42’ and the 1st answer each time was about 42 in Hitchhiker’s Guide.
According to the Hitchhiker's Guide, researchers from a pan-dimensional, hyper-intelligent race of beings, construct Deep Thought, the second greatest computer of all time and space, to calculate the Ultimate Answer. After 7.5 million years of pondering the question, Deep Thought provides the answer: "forty-two."
"Forty-two!" yelled Loonquawl. "Is that all you've got to show for seven and a half million years' work?"
"I checked it very thoroughly," said the computer, "and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question is."

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a fan of this book or not. The computer ‘Deep Thought’ is right – Many people wander through life not bothering to think about what the most important question / questions are.
The ultimate questions surely include:
What is the purpose of life?
Is there a God who loves us?
Is there life beyond death?
For Christians Christmas Day provides answers to these reminding us that God loved the world and every person in it so much that he gave His Son to enter the world – to come and share in the mess of existence in the poverty of a stable. To become a homeless refugee fleeing from his country. & later to know suffering & death.
As Christians we recognise what a wonderful answer Christmas Day is to our needs and the needs of the world. & it’s much more thrilling & full of hope, than the number ‘42’!

Please write each number that is called out, in the box that already has that number in pencil. But pretend you are putting the numbers in at random!

Write as large as you can in the box so that all 16 numbers will be seen clearly at the back.

The square should end up like this:
9 4 18 11
14 15 5 8
3 10 12 17
16 13 7 6
