How to Make a Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder

This is a very interesting novelty to make up.  It can be constructed from key rings or you could make the rings yourself from welding rod or similar material.

Construction diagram of a Jacob's Ladder

You need about thirty rings of approx. one inch diameter or 25mm.

Link them in a chain as shown in the diagram above.  By holding ring A and dropping ring B and vice versa, the dropped ring will appear to run from the top of the chain to the bottom.

You can make this a continuous process.

This is a very pretty effect and could be sold as a money maker at county shows etc if you can find a bulk supplier for the rings.

It can be made more deceptive by having an extra loose ring concealed in your hand.  When a ring has travelled from the top to the bottom, you pretend to catch it with the hand holding the loose ring.

The Jacob's Ladder would also make a very interesting display for a shop window or for a magician's den.  If a motorised rocking mechanism was attached to rings A and B.
