This is a gospel routine for the card
effect known as "Cascade" by Alex Elmsey. It utilises the
ghost count which has more commonly become known as the Elmsey count
Effect:
Four cards all the same value and suit
are counted. One is turned face down and one of the other cards
also turns face down in sympathy. When the cards are counted again
all the cards are now face down. This is repeated several times
then one card is taken away and put into a pocket. It returns to
the cards in the hand. Finally all the cards change. On two
cards the faces change and on the other cards the backs change
Required:
Three cards with the same faces, say
all kings of the same suit but different backs.
Two card with different faces but both
having the same back as one of the kings
Preparation:
Setup the cards as follows. The
three kings should be face up, having the king with the back pattern
which matches the two odd cards in the centre of the other two.
The two odd cards should be face down
and placed behind the centre king.
Performance and
patter:
"The Bible tells us that we have all
like sheep gone astray".
Elmsey count the cards to show that they
are all kings. Step the last two cards forward as they are counted
onto your hand to allow you to get to the third card down in the pile.
"If one sheep jumps over a gate"
Take out the third card down at the same time squaring all the other
cards in the pile. Turn the card face down and place it on top of
the pile.
"One of the other sheep will jump over the gate".
Slide out the bottom card of the pile to show that it has also turned
face down and place it on the top of the pile.
"Jesus said all we like sheep have gone astray".
Elmsey count the cards to show that they are now all face down.
Step the last two forward slightly onto your hand to enable you to get
to the third card down.
"When Jesus came into the world he went about preaching and
telling people to change their ways".
Take out the third card down at the same time squaring all the other
cards in the pile. Turn the card face up and place it on top of
the pile.
"The people that heard Jesus and followed him did change".
Slide out the bottom card of the pile to show that it has also turned
face up and place it on the top of the pile.
Elmsey count the cards to show that they are now all face up. Step
the last two forward slightly onto your hand to enable you to get to the
third card down.
"Some of the people, especially the rulers and the chief priests
didn't like Jesus and the things that he said. They didn't
change their ways"
Take out the third card down at the same time squaring all the other
cards in the pile. Turn the card face down and place it on top of
the pile.
Slide out the bottom card of the pile to show that it has also turned
face down and place it on the top of the pile.
Elmsey count the cards to show that they are now all face down.
Step the last two forward slightly onto your hand to enable you to get
to the third card down.
"So they took Jesus, they
whipped and they stripped him and they nailed him to a wooden cross at a
place called Calvary".
Take out the third card and turn it face up. Hold it up for a few
moments.
"They killed him and then they buried his body in a
tomb".
Place the face up card into your trouser pocket.
"But Jesus is the Son of God and he didn't stay dead. We
read in the Bible that three days later he rose from the dead".
Elmsey count the four cards in your hand to show that one is face
up. Square the cards up.
"Jesus said that we should try to be like him".
Elmsey count the four cards in your hand to show that now two are face
up. Fan the four cards out.
"Jesus also said another wonderful thing. If we accept him
as our Lord and Saviour, he will give us new life and make us new
creations".
Turn the two face down cards face up to show that the faces have changed
to different values and suits. Finally turn the two face up cards
face down to show that the backs are now completely different.
